What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States. Originally a Texas state holiday, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States
What does the Flag mean? Created in 1997, by Ben Haith, the flag with a bursting star in the middle is a symbolic representation of the end of slavery in the United States.
The Star represents the Lone Star State of Texas where Union Soldiers informed the last slaves that they were free, 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The Star also represents African American freedom in all 50 states
The Arc represents a new horizon and the promise that lay ahead for African Americans
The colors: Red, White and Blue represent the US Flag and a reminder that slaves and their descendants were and are Americans.
